This summer, Hollywood’s release schedule is brimming with an eclectic mix of major franchises, superhero epics, science fiction dramas, animated films, and original features. Among the highlights is “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “Supergirl,” alongside Christopher Nolan’s ambitious take on “The Odyssey.” From June through August, moviegoers can expect a diverse lineup as studios roll out their latest offerings.
Kicking off the summer is “Scary Movie,” hitting theaters on June 5. The sixth installment of the franchise reunites several original cast members and is set to parody newer horror films such as “M3GAN,” “A Quiet Place,” “Get Out,” and “Sinners.” Meanwhile, renowned director Steven Spielberg returns to his science fiction roots with a new film exploring the notion that extraterrestrial life might already be present on Earth, starring Josh O’Connor as a cybersecurity expert in pursuit of the truth.
June 19 will see the release of “The Death of Robin Hood,” which offers a fresh take on the legendary story, complementing a series of reimagined characters and franchises this summer. On the same day, “Leviticus” examines conversion therapy and religious repression through a supernatural horror lens, set in a conservative Christian community in Australia. “Rose of Nevada,” also debuting June 19, features George MacKay and Callum Turner as fishermen on a vessel that mysteriously reappears after 30 years, only to transport them back in time when they set sail again.
As the month closes, another superhero tale emerges with “Supergirl” on June 26. Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the film explores her involvement in an intergalactic battle sparked by an attack on her dog, Krypto, further expanding the DC cinematic universe. July continues with “Minions & Monsters,” a prequel in the Despicable Me franchise set in 1920s Hollywood, where Minions endeavor to create a monster film by conjuring a real creature. Disney joins the live-action adaptation trend with “Moana” on July 10, featuring Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui.
Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey” graces screens on July 17, showcasing Matt Damon as Odysseus in a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, and Zendaya. “Motor City,” arriving on July 24, stars Alan Ritchson as an ex-con seeking vengeance in the dialogue-sparse action film set in 1970s Detroit. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 31, exploring new threats and powers in a world where his identity is forgotten. August offerings include Jane Schoenbrun’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” on August 7, a slasher reboot starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, and “The End of Oak Street,” a mystery-horror film by David Robert Mitchell releasing on August 14. Finally, “Coyote vs. Acme” arrives on August 28, blending live-action and animation as Wile E. Coyote seeks justice against Acme for its faulty products, reviving a long-debated Hollywood project. With established franchises and original films vying for attention, the summer 2026 season promises a vibrant cinematic experience.
