Facing accusations of widespread corruption, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has firmly denied any wrongdoing within his Socialist party following the sentencing of a former senior aide in a significant graft scandal tied to government contracts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a parliamentary address, Sanchez dismissed claims of a pervasive corruption crisis, arguing that his political rivals were attempting to exaggerate the situation. He refuted any knowledge or involvement in illegal activities concerning Jose Luis Abalos, the ex-transport minister who received a 24-year prison sentence for corruption-related charges.
The scandal has put Sanchez’s administration under increased scrutiny, especially with ongoing investigations targeting former associates and some of his family members. Notably, a court is advancing with a trial involving his wife, Begona Gomez, who faces allegations of influence peddling.
Sanchez staunchly defended his government, acknowledging that errors might occur but emphasizing his commitment to continue governing rather than stepping down. He accused his opponents of leveraging these investigations to undermine his leadership.
Despite growing calls from opposition parties for his resignation and demands for early elections, Sanchez has stood firm, stating his intention to fulfill his term as prime minister, which is set to conclude in 2027.
