A scorching heatwave in June has inflicted an estimated €2 billion in agricultural damages across Europe, slashing grain production by about 9 million tonnes. This alarming reduction has sparked concerns over rising food prices and the security of the region’s food supply.
Key crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and oats have been severely affected, with this year’s grain harvest in the European Union and the United Kingdom expected to be the smallest since 2018. The harsh weather conditions have particularly taken a toll on maize during its crucial pollination period and on wheat during the grain development stage, leading to diminished yields in several prominent agricultural areas.
France is anticipated to bear the brunt of these losses, with maize production forecasted to decrease by approximately 3.4 million tonnes. Hungary and Spain are also facing significant reductions. Reports from farmers across Europe indicate extensive damage, with some projecting crop yields to drop by as much as 50% to 70% due to the persistent high temperatures and drought conditions.
In the United Kingdom, the extended dry spell during the spring and early summer months has also impacted crop growth. To cope, farmers have been compelled to start harvesting sooner than usual and to intensify irrigation efforts to safeguard the production of fruits, vegetables, and livestock.
The diminished harvest is likely to heighten Europe’s dependence on grain imports, potentially pushing global grain and food prices higher. Market experts caution that similar weather-related challenges in other major agricultural regions, such as drought-hit areas in the United States, could further constrain global food supplies.
