The European Union is set to bolster its ties with Azerbaijan through a significant financial commitment aimed at enhancing the country’s infrastructure. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed that the EU would allocate up to €200 million in grants to Azerbaijan. This funding is intended to advance transport, energy, and digital infrastructure projects and is projected to stimulate up to €2 billion in combined public and private investments.
During her visit to Baku, von der Leyen met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to discuss areas of mutual interest, including energy cooperation, regional connectivity, and the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process. In line with these discussions, von der Leyen introduced the idea of a new EU-Azerbaijan connectivity partnership, signaling a commitment to further deepen the collaborative relationship between the two parties.
President Aliyev highlighted the substantial increase in Azerbaijani gas exports to the EU, noting a rise of approximately 65% since the 2022 energy agreement with the European Union. Currently, ten EU countries are benefitting from Azerbaijani gas imports, showcasing the strategic importance of Azerbaijan in the EU’s energy landscape.
In addition to the infrastructure grants, von der Leyen announced a €20 million support program targeting border communities in Azerbaijan. This initiative will focus on critical areas such as healthcare, mine clearance, rural development, and support for small businesses, aiming to improve the quality of life in these regions.
Continuing her diplomatic mission in the South Caucasus, von der Leyen plans to engage in discussions in Armenia, further emphasizing the EU’s interest in fostering stability and development in the region.
